Motorcycles and Hearing Protection

As the temperatures start to rise, motorcyclists are enjoying being able to take their bikes out once again. It’s more than just a hobby—motorcycling is a passion and even a lifestyle for some!

Of course, when you spend a lot of time doing an activity, it’s important to know how it can affect your health. One risk is too often overlooked: noise.

We all know that motorcycles can be noisy.

However, once the bike reaches cruising speed, the loudest noise isn’t actually the engine. It’s the wind. Even if it’s not a windy day, the air rushing past the driver can have the same effect. It’s hard to tell exactly how loud it is because there are so many factors: speed, the driver’s position and tilt, the type of helmet, whether the bike has a windshield, etc.

That said, studies agree that at highway speeds, the sound of the wind can reach 103 dB SPL, which is the same volume as a chainsaw.

Canadian standards state that this volume is only acceptable for seven minutes before permanent damage can set in! It has also been proven that noise exposure causes fatigue and reduces the ability to concentrate. This means that noise doesn’t just make driving less enjoyable. It’s less safe as well.

Possible Solutions

How can motorcyclists stay safe?

  • First, they can try to change the airflow and see how the changes affect the noise of the wind. Airflow can be unpredictable, so drivers may need to try a number of things; some changes may even make the noise louder instead of quieter, as expected. For example, depending on its height relative to the driver, a windshield or deflector might actually make the problem worse if the air is being directed to the wrong place. In general, a very high windshield seems to be the best option for avoiding this.

  • Of course, choosing the right helmet is key. The helmet must fit well and the visor should be as airtight as possible. Modular and full-face helmets should also prevent air from entering through the chin portion. Your motorcycle accessory retailer should be able to help you choose the helmet that will protect your hearing the best.

  • For that reason, hearing protectors are crucial, especially on long rides. Standard earplugs are often uncomfortable because they don’t fit every ear. It’s also important to realize that the protection factor on the packaging of standard earplugs is often inaccurate; manufacturers assume that the plugs will be inserted deep into the ear and fully block the canal. Additionally, many users mistakenly believe that they have inserted the earplugs properly.

The safest solution is to purchase custom earmolds. They will provide the greatest protection and comfort, because they are perfectly molded to the shape of your ears.
